Sample News Group buys 3 dailies from GateHouse
Sample News Group, the Huntingdon-based publisher of hometown newspapers, has acquired three daily newspapers, two in Pennsylvania and one in New York, from GateHouse Media, Inc., effective Sept. 2.

The newspapers include the Morning Times of Sayre, The Standard-Journal of Milton-Lewisburg and The Palladium Times of Oswego, N.Y. The acquisition makes Sample one of the largest publishing groups in Pennsylvania. The group includes 10 daily newspapers, 20 weekly newspapers, two business and lifestyle magazines, and three commercial printing plants in five states.

Former Philadelphia Inquirer editor, Guthman, dies
Ed Guthman, former editorial page editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, died Sunday, Aug. 31, at age 89.

Guthman came to The Inquirer in 1977, and for 10 years led the editorial board as it argued its way to consensus on the most important issues facing Philadelphia and the nation. Guthman is remembered as a guiding force who was never abrasive, always respectful of a contrary point of view, forever raising questions to make sure an ultimate position was clearly understood.

Foundation Update: Newspapers play crucial role during election
The 2008 Presidential election is proving to be an historic one. With all eyes on this unprecedented race, what better time to showcase the importance of newspapers? Capitol Notes: From the Senate Bill 1 to Act 3 – proposal to reality
Although it has been only a couple of months since Gov. Rendell appointed Terry Mutchler as the Exec. Director of the new Office of Open Records, by all accounts she has hit the ground running.

So too has the Treasury Department, as in a recent York Dispatch discussion, in successfully meeting its statutory deadline to maintain a real-time, online searchable database of state contracts.

Over in Fayette County we read of recent steps taken there to meet the county’s obligations under the new law in a timely manner. Similar activities are undoubtedly going on all over the state, and we’ll be sure to keep you apprised of the statewide implementation of Act 3 as the calendar moves along toward Jan. 1, 2009, when the new law goes into full effect.

PNA welcomes Abigail Ketchum as membership manager
The PNA is proud to welcome back Abigail Ketchum – this time as our membership manager. In her new role, she will act as the association’s membership ambassador. Ketchum will specifically focus on developing business partnerships and creating new member programs to benefit PNA members.

Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Services Inc. emerges with a new identity as MANSI Media
On Sept. 3, Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Services Inc. announced its name change to MANSI Media. MANSI Media, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the PNA, unveiled a rebranding initiative, aiming to better promote itself as a full service provider of newspaper and local online advertising placement services with national and international reach.

Lisa Knight, vice president of advertising sales explains, “Our new identity better reflects our current mission – to simplify placement of advertising into newspapers and other integrated media – and will help to overcome the misperception that our services are limited geographically. We can place media anywhere, anytime, and fast, too!”

Hey newspapers, how about offering other attractions such as social networking?
The major problem for newspapers is that the additional digital pennies earned from their news Web sites come nowhere close to replacing the analog dollars lost by their print products. So maybe a solution is to run additional Web sites that have nothing to do with news but that can attract the real masses and hopefully new advertisers – such as social networking sites for the local community?

Wall Street Journal debuts lifestyle mag to draw luxury ads
The Wall Street Journal's new glossy lifestyle magazine for high-end consumers will debut with this Saturday's newspaper as the company looks to boost advertising opportunities amid an overall decline in the industry.

The launch of WSJ. — the period in the title is silent — comes as a weakening economy has accelerated a long-term decline in advertising sales by newspapers and magazines as readers and advertisers alike turn to the Internet.
