From the Hotline
By Teri Henning
Pennsylvania Newspaper Association
Q: What can a reporter say if he or she wants to object to the closing of a meeting?
A: A reporter could object using the following (or similar) language:
Mr. or Madame Chairman (or other appropriate title):
I am _______, a reporter for__________newspaper.
I protest the closing of this meeting, because the reason you have listed for closing the meeting does not meet the provisions of Pennsylvania's Open Meetings Law. I ask that you reconsider your intent to discuss this matter in executive session. I further ask that this protest be recorded in the official minutes of the meeting, as required by law.
You can also find this language on the PNA Web
site here.
Q: Does the PNA have a form letter that a reporter can use to request public records?
A: Yes. You can access the letter at
www.pa-newspaper.org/legal/open.htm.
Please feel free to call the Legal Hotline at (717) 703-3076 if you have specific questions about a closed meeting or making a records request.
