Q: A local church wants to advertise a New Year’s Eve fundraising event and advertise beer and mixed drinks for sale. The church does not have a liquor license. Can an organization that doesn’t have a liquor license sell alcohol?
A: Yes, if the organization has obtained a Special Occasion Permit.
Eligible organizations such as churches, civic groups and similar organizations can obtain a Special Occasion Permit from the Liquor Control Board. This permit allows the eligible organization to legally sell alcohol for a limited period of time for fund raising purposes. Organizations that hold a Special Occasion Permit are required to follow the same rules and regulations as those who hold a traditional liquor license, including advertising requirements.
