PNA Foundation launches 'Pay It Forward' campaign

By Jane Hungarter, VP of Marketing and Communications
Pennsylvania Newspaper Association

The PNA Foundation recently hosted three well-attended focus groups across Pennsylvania to launch the Pennsylvania Newspapers Pay It Forward campaign. Representatives from more than 50 newspapers had the chance to learn about the details of the program and ask questions. One lucky attendee from each focus group won $250 in seed money from the PNA Foundation to kick-start their Pay It Forward initiative.

The Pennsylvania Newspapers Pay It Forward campaign is designed to raise the profile of Pennsylvania’s newspapers by demonstrating our commitment to the communities we serve. Participating newspapers will sponsor a contest offering a cash prize award. Readers will be asked to submit an entry that details what they intend to do, to benefit someone or something in their local community, if they were awarded the cash prize. A judging panel will select the entry deemed most worthy and award the prize to that entrant. A journalist and photographer from each newspaper will cover the story from the presentation of the cash prize through the implementation of the act of kindness.

It is the goal of the PNA Foundation to make this initiative as easy as possible for each of Pennsylvania’s newspapers to participate. A turn-key marketing kit containing templated ads, press releases, an introductory video and many more relevant items will be sent to interested newspapers on Feb. 15. If your newspaper was unable to attend one of the three focus groups but would like more information about this program, please contact PNA Foundation Director Lauren Lee at (717) 703-3002 or e-mail payitforward@pa-news.org.
