2 editors promoted at Reading Eagle
Harry J. Deitz Jr. has been named editor of the Reading Eagle, Publisher William S. Flippin announced Dec. 30.
David S. Mowery has been named managing editor, the publisher said.
Deitz was named managing editor in 2006 and had been the assistant managing editor since 1989. He joined the Eagle in 1978 as a sportswriter. He was named daily sports editor in 1984 and design editor in 1985.
Before joining the Eagle, he was sports editor of The News-Item, Shamokin, Northumberland County, and editor of the Citizen-Standard, Valley View, Schuylkill County.
Deitz is a past president of the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors and the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editors. He has been a member of the PSNE board since 1995 and the PAPME board since 2003.
He is a graduate of Bloomsburg University and lives in Bern Township.
Mowery was named assistant managing editor in 2006 and had been city editor since 2000. He joined the newsroom staff in 1984 and was a general assignment reporter and court reporter until 1996, when he joined the copy desk. He was named an assistant city editor in 1999.
A Shillington resident, he is a graduate of Shippensburg University.
Flippin also announced the appointment of John C. Boor Jr. to the post of administrative editor.
Boor was named electronic news editor in 2006. He also has served as systems editor and director of information services. He joined the Eagle in 1999. He is a resident of Denver, Lancaster County.
John D. Forester Jr., who recently was named news editor, will continue in that position. He has previously served as assignment editor, assistant city editor and senior reporter. He joined the staff of the former Reading Times in 1969 as a reporter and obituary writer. He resides in Kenhorst.
James W. Kerr and Thomas F. Knause will be assistant news editors. Kerr, who has been metro editor since 2001, will continue to oversee the metro staff.
Kerr joined the newsroom as a copy editor in 1998. Previously he was a reporter, copy editor and city editor for The Mercury, Pottstown. He is a graduate of Shippensburg University and resides in Douglassville.
Knause joined the staff as a reporter in 1984 and has worked as a page designer, copy editor and assistant city editor. A resident of Reading, he is a graduate of LaSalle University.
Also, Jon Fassnacht has been named to the new position of assistant news editor/Internet and will coordinate online news coverage.
Fassnacht joined the Eagle as a business reporter and editor in 2002. He is a graduate of Penn State University and resides in Spring Township.
