PNA survey reveals positive outlook for future journalists in Pennsylvania

By Janet Bevan, Manager of Outreach and Partnerships
PNA Foundation

The PNA Foundation recently conducted a survey of PNA members to get a better feel for what career opportunities lie ahead for future journalists. This data was intended to provide advice and observations for student newspaper advisers so they could better prepare students for careers in the newspaper industry. While the media often portrays newspapers as a dying industry, this survey might just change your mind. Future Pennsylvania journalists should be optimistic after reading these findings.

The survey was sent to Pennsylvania publishers, editors, executive editors and managing editors and drew responses from about 85 publications, representing dailies, weeklies and monthlies (some duplicate responses from survey participants explains survey percentage imbalances).

Survey results were shared with Pennsylvania student newspapers advisers on Friday, March 28, during a forum held for student newspaper advisers at the PNA. Many of those attending the forum requested that we post the survey results so that all Pennsylvania journalism students, advisers and other interested parties could share the information, advice and observations collected from our members.
