Raymond Gover, former president and publisher of The (Harrisburg) Patriot-News and a member of the Milton Hershey School Board of Managers, has won a national award for his work on behalf of the Derry Twp. school for underprivileged children.
Gover, of Hampden Twp., was named the Catherine Hershey Board Member of the Year by the Coalition of Residential Education, a nonprofit organization for residential education programs serving needy children.
"As a board member, I have tried hard to keep in mind the responsibility to three constituencies -- the children, the staff and the Deed of Trust that set the guidelines for this incredible institution almost 100 years ago," Gover said in a statement. "My pledge is to continue the advocacy for those three vital constituencies through the remainder of my term."
Gover has been a member of the board since 2003.
This is the second year the award has been given to a board member on one of the 40 member schools of the Coalition of Residential Education.
It is named in honor of Catherine Hershey, who with her husband, Milton, founded the school in 1909.
LeRoy S. Zimmerman, chairman of the Milton Hershey School Board of Managers, said in a statement that Gover has overseen a $500 million capital expansion on campus.
"His service and commitment embody Mr. and Mrs. Hershey's legacy of generosity and hope," Zimmerman said.
Gover is also a director of the Hershey Trust Co., the Milton Hershey Foundation and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association Foundation.
