Leon I. Baden

Leon I. Baden, 85, of Hampden Twp., died early Friday morning, Oct. 12., at Select Specialty Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa.

He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Hazleton, Pa., the son of David and Rose Baden.

He served as a signalman in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State College, now the Pennsylvania State University, with a Bachelor's degree in journalism and earned a Master's from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the trade group now known as the Society of Professional Journalists.

He began his career at the Hazleton Standard-Speaker, went on to work at The Patriot-News, then four years at the Toledo Blade and later returned to The Patriot- News, where he retired in 2000 as a copy editor at age 78, with 41 years of service. He was a member of Chisuk Emuna Congregation in Harrisburg.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Marianne Troup of Harrisburg; their two daughters, Rebecca M. Baden-Eberwein and her husband, David A. Eberwein of Northern Virginia, and Dr. Amanda L. Baden and her husband, Michael L. Glicksman of New York City; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Marianne and John "Jack" E. Eberwein.
