Foundation Update: From hunting to baseball

By Lauren Lee, Director
Pennsylvania Newspaper Association Foundation

Going once, going twice....sold to the gentleman in the last row! We've gone from focusing on deer hunting in Pennsylvania to balls, bats and everything baseball! This year's Foundation Auction is sure to be one of our best yet! Even non-fans can't ignore the energy in the air with long-overdue teams like the Phillies and Cubs in the playoffs.

Please consider making a donation to this year's Auction. The Foundation is on a roll with new training opportunities, town hall meetings and the emergence of a student editors interest group. Help us keep up the momentum...and have fun too!

I would be remiss if I didn't flaunt the success of last week's town hall meeting. Approximately two-hundred concerned citizens gathered together in the Coudersport High School auditorium to ask questions and listen to representatives from the State's Game Commission, USDA Forest Service and local tourism bureau. Pennsylvania Cable Network CEO, Brian Lockman facilitated the lively discussion.

Everyone who participated in the meeting welcomed the opportunity to share their views and ideas about the future of deer hunting in Pennsylvania. Donald Gilliland, managing editor of The Potter Leader-Enterprise in Coudersport did a tremendous job at publicizing the event and was right on the mark in seeking out excellent panelists. That said, the Foundation's first town-hall meeting is testament to the power of community newspapers in bringing people together.
