Philadelphia Media Holdings lays off 34 in advertising sales
Philadelphia Media Holdings L.L.C., which owns The Inquirer and Daily News, on Jan. 8 said it was laying off 34 employees in advertising sales. The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia said that represented about 12 percent of the department. The cutbacks came less than a week after PMH laid off 68 reporters, copy editors, photographers, and other newsroom employees.


City school district to appeal New Castle News decision
It appears the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rushed to judgment.

In reversing its decision, the court said last week it will accept the New Castle Area School District's petition for allowance of appeal involving a case with the New Castle News.

Times Leader Managing Editor Iseman out; Butkiewicz named interim
(Wilkes-Barre) Times Leader Managing Editor David Iseman, who also wrote a column published Fridays, no longer works at the newspaper. Joe Butkiewicz has been named interim managing editor.


Cascioli named ad director of Erie Times-News
Times Publishing Company is pleased to announce the appointment of Terry Cascioli to the position of advertising director for the Erie Times-News. Cascioli comes to the newspaper from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where for the past five years he held several management positions, the most recent as display advertising director.

3 top publishers plan joint Web ad buys
Three major newspaper publishers, Gannett Co., McClatchy Co. and Tribune Co., are said to be considering a plan to allow clients to buy Web site advertising for all three companies in one deal, according to an article in The Wall Street Journal.

In recent years, newspaper publishers increasingly have lost advertising and subscription dollars to the Internet, sparking downsizing efforts and greater pressure from investors.
