Introducing passopenrecords.org: Blog to lift lid on Pa. government
For years now, people concerned about First Amendment and good government issues have worked to reform Pennsylvania's antiquated open records law. And for years, public officials have fought tooth and nail to keep it. But the tide is changing.

Passopenrecords.org is a link among all those committed to open records reform. Edited by former publisher of The Kennett Paper (Kennett Square), Jamie Blaine, this blog will share the latest news, views and information as Pennsylvania moves closer to enacting a modern open records law. Blog visitors are urged to comment on posts and add to the debate.

Passopenrecords.org is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, in the fight for stronger open records legislation. This is a follow-up to PNA's campaign for legislative reform, Brighter Pennsylvania.

New Pittsburgh Courier starts running tally of 'attacks on us by us'
Pittsburgh's black newspaper, which reaches households in neighborhoods where gun violence happens often, is keeping a running tally of people killed in the city and county -- to send a harsh message.

The message is as layered as the problem is complex, says New Pittsburgh Courier publisher Rod Doss. But the dominant point is clear in the project's title: "Under Attack by Us."

Legislative and open-records reform could be a lengthy process
The special state House commission that changed some of the House's secretive ways of operating in just two months could find it will take years to implement its next wave of reforms.

The Speaker's Commission on Legislative Reform held its first hearing in Pittsburgh on the second phase of its work, which will concentrate on the state's open records law, campaign financing, the size of the Legislature and whether there should be term limits for legislators.

Public Opinion: Restaurant inspections should be public
Pennsylvania's auditor general issued a report critical of the state's restaurant inspection process nearly two years ago, and he pledges to revisit the issue again later this year. Auditor General Jack Wagner believes restaurants should be inspected more frequently than they are, and he believes the results of those inspections should be public.

So does the Chambersburg Public Opinion.
