Tribune-Review Publishing Co. to buy Daily News of McKeesport

The Tribune-Review Publishing Co. reached an agreement (April 13) to purchase The Daily News of McKeesport from the Latrobe Printing and Publishing Co.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, The Daily News will continue to publish six days a week and serve communities in the Monongahela Valley as it has since 1884. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of May.

"We believe the Daily News is a solid community newspaper with dedicated readers in the Mon Valley," said Ralph Martin, president and CEO of Tribune-Review Publishing.

The Daily News will become part of the Pittsburgh area's largest newspaper group, which operates under the name Trib Total Media, Martin said.

"The addition of The Daily News to our Trib Total Media portfolio shows that we are committed to providing news and information to the region, and flexibility for advertisers who want to reach slices of the Greater Pittsburgh area," he said.

The Daily News has 40 to 45 employees and a daily circulation of about 15,000, Martin said. Staff members were informed of the deal Friday morning. No major changes in operation are planned, he said.

The purchase of The Daily News follows the Tribune-Review's acquisition last month of six weekly newspapers in Westmoreland County.

Latrobe Printing and Publishing purchased the Daily News in 2004 from the Mansfield family, which had owned the paper since 1925.

"We are appreciative of the great support we have had from the employees and the community, and believe the paper will prosper under the synergies the new owners will bring," said Daily News Publisher Chris Miles. "We leave this newspaper in good hands and are confident the Tribune-Review will continue the tradition of serving the readers and advertisers in the Mon Valley and surrounding communities."

Latrobe Printing and Publishing Co. will continue to publish the Latrobe Bulletin, a daily newspaper in Latrobe; Mainline Newspapers, a six-newspaper weekly group based in Ebensburg, Cambria County; and, in Cumberland County, the weekly News-Chronicle and Valley Times-Star of Shippensburg and Newville.

Tribune-Review Publishing publishes six daily newspapers, including the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Tribune-Review in Greensburg.

Its other operations include Trib PM, an afternoon newspaper; 24 weekly newspapers; several magazines; and Web sites.
