Arden Skidmore, former AP and newspaper reporter, dies

Arden "Skid" Skidmore, a former reporter for newspapers and The Associated Press, has died. He was 91.

Skidmore died of natural causes at home in Lima, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 23 according to his death certificate.

He was born in Holly and was raised in Morgantown, but lived in Middletown Township, Pa., for the last 57 years.

He wrote his first news story for The Dominion-News of Morgantown in 1929 at the age of 15 and was sports editor at that paper and the Clarksburg Telegram in the late 1930s.

He attended West Virginia University and served as its sports publicity director from 1939 to 1941.

Skidmore worked for The AP in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Pa., and Philadelphia bureaus from 1942 to 1948.

From 1948 to 1979, when he retired, he was the wire editor and a staff writer for The Chester Times in Chester, Pa. His interest in local history led to his writing a column called "Other Times." He also wrote a series of 60 historical articles for the Saturday magazine section that won him a citation from Historic Delaware County.

During World War II he served in the Navy.

He is survived by a son, two daughters, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services and burial will be private.
