Tribune-Review to reorganize papers
The Tribune-Review Publishing Co. announced a reorganization of operations for its family of newspapers on Jan. 19, including the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Tribune-Review in Greensburg. 

The changes, described to employees in a series of meetings, are designed to help the company operate more efficiently and to enable the newspapers to better serve readers and advertisers, said Edward H. Harrell, the company's president.

VC firm invests in Journal Publications
Penn Venture Partners, a Harrisburg-based venture-capital group, has invested an undisclosed sum in Journal Publications Inc. (JPI), publisher of Central Penn Business Journal and Central Penn Parent.

Former Tribune-Review editor Carlton who led staff revolt dead at 71.
Former newspaper editor Jack Warne Carlton, who inadvertently set off a staff revolt in support of a reporter who had spoken out against Richard Nixon, has died. Carlton was 71. 

He died Jan. 14 of heart failure at the Redstone Highlands Senior Living Communities in North Huntingdon, Pa.

Katherine Hatton to be honored with Benjamin Franklin Award at 2005 Government Affairs Conference.
Attorney and media law expert Katherine Hatton was selected as the 2004 recipient of the Benjamin Franklin Award of Excellence from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. Hatton will be presented with the award during the Feb. 1, 2005 Government Affairs Conference luncheon at The Harrisburg Hilton and Towers.

Janice L. Ogurcak, an editor at the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, has taken over as director of the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum.

This workshop concentrates on basic editing skills and how to recognize and correct the most common mistakes that journalists make in writing news copy. Foreman ran day-to-day operations of The Philadelphia Inquirer for 25 years and is currently a professor at Penn State University.

Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry issues guidance on youth carriers.
Last year, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry contacted a Pennsylvania newspaper after receiving a complaint about its practices with respect to youth carriers. The primary issues were: 1) the start time for minors - they cannot start before 5 a.m.; and 2) whether the youth carriers under 16 had or needed employment certificates.

NNA President says community newspapers insulted by Wal-Mart PR strategy   
In an effort to counter growing criticism of Wal-Mart, the firm is attempting to have community newspapers across the country give it some free PR.

But the effort has been met with protest from America's community newspapers, which have been ignored by the firm in its media buying strategy.
