PNA asks judge’s ruling over a sealed lawsuit to be overturned.
The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association has asked the state Superior Court to reverse a judge’s order that prevents the Times Leader from seeing a sealed lawsuit.

The newspaper is trying to view a suit filed by PAChild Care against two state Department of Public Welfare officials and Luzerne County Controller Steve Flood. The officials have been critical of the $58-million lease county commissioners signed with the company to house juvenile delinquents.

Herald Standard cannot be sued for disclosing minor's name.
A newspaper that printed the name of a 15-year-old rape suspect cannot be sued for disclosing the boy's identity, a federal appeals court ruled.

Pennsylvania law generally prohibits law enforcement agencies from disclosing the names of minors arrested for a crime until they have been convicted, but a three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that prohibition does not extend to newspapers.

News organizations have challenged a judge's decision to drape a shroud of secrecy over the court proceedings that led to the removal of a juror from a City Hall corruption trial.

Merge tabloid hits the streets.
On March 30, The Morning Call published the first printed edition of its free, weekly (Wed.) tabloid, Merge. The tabloid, which focuses on an 18-34 age group, started as a digital publication, MergeDigital.com, launched in December 2004.

Morning Call captures first gold ADDY ever.
The Greater Lehigh Valley Ad Club (GLVAC) presented The Morning Call with one gold, two silver and three bronze ADDYs at its 2004-2005 ADDY Awards Ceremony for advertising creative excellence March 4 at The Meadows in Hellertown.

McQuade of Philadelphia Daily News recognized for headline writing in ACES contest.
The American Copy Editors Society (ACES) has awarded five copy editors for exemplary headline writing in 2004.

The top prize in the 100,000 to 250,000 circulation category was won by Drew McQuade of the Philadelphia Daily News. Among McQuade's entries: Ruthless! Red Sox oust Yankees, ghosts, advance to World Series.

Reporters need federal shield law to protect sources, journalists say
A new federal shield law must be enacted to defend reporters' right to protect their confidential sources, a panel of journalists said April 19.

The presentation at the annual meeting of the Newspaper Association of America came as one of the panelists, New York Times Senior Writer Judith Miller, lost a key court battle over her refusal to testify about conversations she had had with government officials about the identity of an undercover CIA agent.

AP to Impose Online Licensing Fees
The Associated Press will begin charging newspapers and broadcasters to post its stories, photos and other content online, a pricing shift that reflects the growing power of the Internet to lure audiences and advertisers from more established media.

Tom Curley, AP president and CEO, announced the change Monday, April 18 at the annual meeting of the 156-year-old news cooperative.
