Controlling color on press: Newspapers using new tools
As newspapers strive to improve the overall appearance of their products and continue to adopt more commercial work, they are quickly learning that registration and color control in daily operations are critical.
Increasingly, newspapers are opting for on-press tools to handle color registration. For many, closed-loop color and register controls offer an alternative to more costly press investments.
One publisher deploying color registration technology is Lancaster Newspapers Inc. in Lancaster, Pa., which tapped CC1 Inc. to install its eXaminer registration system.

Post-Gazette Managing Editor Ross departs
Madelyn Ross is leaving as managing editor of the Post-Gazette, Executive Editor David M. Shribman announced April 12.
"The Post-Gazette has terminated Managing Editor Maddy Ross's employment effective April 30, 2005, as a result of differences in chemistry," Shribman said in a company statement to the newsroom. "The ownership and staff of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette acknowledge Maddy's long-term dedication and contribution and leadership and wish her well."

Mary L. Beilman dies; chaired Packet board
Mary Louise Beilman, chairman of the board of The Princeton Packet Inc., died Sunday, April 10. She was 93.
Mrs. Beilman was the widow of Bernard Kilgore, who purchased The Princeton Packet in 1955 and added five newspapers to that group before he died in 1967 at age 59. The Packet group, which now includes 18 publications, remains in the Kilgore family.

Division production directors Webb and Cleaver named at Tribune-Review
Two new division production directors have been named at the Tribune-Review Publishing Co., Chief Operating Officer Ralph J. Martin announced.
Richard Webb is the new South Division Production Director and Chet Cleaver is the North Division Production Director.

Report: Newspaper Sites Will Bring In $1.52B in 2005
Newspapers' online operations grew to a $1.19 billion industry in 2004, according to a new report from Borrell Associates.
While online sites represented about 3% of a newspaper company's revenue, the segment accounted for 45% of advertising growth. Newspaper sites are expected to reap $1.52 billion overall in 2005.

Community newspapers may pay less, not more, for some mail in 2006!
Publishers using within county mail got a piece of good news this week, wrapped inside the bad news that postal rates are likely to go up 5.4 percent in January.
For within county mail, the new rates will be a decrease of 5 to 6 percent, the National Newspaper Association announced April 8. That assumes the Postal Rate Commission will accept the rates requested by USPS.

Senate Bill to Restore Existing Business Relationship for Faxes
Legislation restoring the existing business relationship exemption for commercial faxes has been introduced in the Senate by Sens. Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Daniel Inouye (D-HI). The legislation (S. 714) is similar to the bill reported out of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee last Congress which, in addition to the EBR exemption, provides individuals with an opportunity to opt out of receiving faxes.

Action on Postal Reform Legislation Expected
Postal reform legislation has been reintroduced in the House (H.R. 22) and the Senate (S. 662), and committee action on the legislation is expected in mid-April. Both bills in the House and Senate contain a provision that would repeal the requirement for an escrow account. USPS management has suggested that it might withdraw or modify the postal rate case if legislation were to be enacted.

Department Stores May Reduce Newspaper Advertising
Carey Watson, who recently retied as senior vice president, marketing, at Burdine’s-Macy’s, delivered a strong message about retail advertising to executives during a panel session at NAA's Newspapers ’05 conference in Dallas on March 22. Watson, now a consultant to Federated, explained why newspapers are losing retail advertising dollars and what they can do to stanch the bleeding.

News staffs shrinking while minority presence grows
The number of full-time journalists working at daily newspapers continues to fall while the number of minority journalists inched up nearly a half of a percentage point to 13.42 percent in 2004. Since the economic downturn of 2001, newsrooms have lost a net of more than 2,200 journalists while the number of minority journalists has increased.
