Journal Register Co. buys Berks-Mont newspaper group.

TRENTON, N.J. - Newspaper publisher Journal Register Co. has acquired a weekly newspaper group based in Boyertown, Pa., the company announced Monday.

Berks-Mont Newspapers Inc. is a chain of paid weeklies with a combined circulation of 168,000 serving an area north of Philadelphia. Papers in the group include The Kutztown Area Patriot and The Hamburg Area Item

"This fine community newspaper group, which serves Berks, Bucks and Montgomery counties, is a natural complement to our large cluster of newspaper in the Philadelphia suburbs," said Journal Register Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert M. Jelenic.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Journal Register is the Trenton-based publisher of the New Haven (Conn.) Register, The Trentonian and 25 other daily newspapers.

The company posted a 6 percent increase in second-quarter profit in June, and reported that net income for the three months ending June 27 was $14.8 million, or 35 cents per share, up from $13.9 million, or 34 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Revenues rose 3 percent to $107.7 million in the period. The results reflect strong growth in advertising revenues, which were up 4.8 percent, to $81.5 million, Jelenic said.

James C. Webb, president and owner of Berks-Mont Newspapers, will continue to serve as publisher of Berks-Mont.
