The William A. Schnader Print Media Awards Competition was established 25 years ago by the Pennsylvania Bar Association to honor journalistic excellence in news or feature reporting of the legal system and its operations. Named after a former state attorney general and PBA president, the Schnader Awards Competition is designed to recognize journalists who through their writing: foster greater public understanding of our legal system; inform and educate citizens as to the roles of society and the law, the courts, law enforcement agencies, and the legal profession; and disclose practices or procedures needing correction or improvement so as to encourage and promote efforts to improve and modernize our laws, courts or law enforcement agencies statewide. The competition is funded by the national law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP.

ELIGIBILITY
Any newspaper reporter, editor or publisher is eligible to enter the Schnader Awards Competition by submitting material that was published between July 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004. Books and lengthy manuscripts will not be considered. Entries should relate to the work of the bench, bar, law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities or to the law itself.

ENTRY CATEGORIES
There are four categories for judging. Entrants may submit up to three articles in each Beat Coverage category. Up to two entries may be submitted per newspaper in the Special Report/Series category. The categories are as follows:

  • Beat Coverage for Daily Newspapers: 49,000 or more circulation

  • Beat Coverage for Daily Newspapers: Under 49,000 circulation

  • Beat Coverage for Weekly Newspapers

  • Special Report/Series

JUDGING
The Schnader Awards Competition Judging Committee is composed of lawyers, judges, journalism professors and print media representatives. The committee will choose the winning entry for each category based on the entry’s:

  • Educational Value

  • Organization

  • Thoroughness

  • Creativity

  • Effectiveness in Presentation

By granting an award, the Pennsylvania Bar Association does not necessarily endorse the position taken by the entrant.

AWARDS
Awards will be presented to the first and second place winners of each category. The awards are as follows:

  • 1st Place: $350

  • 2nd Place: $100

The awards will be presented to the winners at the “Newspaper of the Year Luncheon” during the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association Annual Meeting on Friday, October 29, 2004, at the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel in Pittsburgh.

ENTRY RULES
The Schnader Awards Competition only will consider entries that have been submitted according to the following entry rules: 

  • Only the creator of an entry or an officer of the media organization that published the entry may submit a nomination.

  • Entrants may submit up to three articles in each Beat Coverage category. Each newspaper may submit up to two entries in the Special Report/Series category.

  • Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form or a facsimile. 

  • One original clipping of each entry with the publication place and date listed must be submitted. Please arrange each entry for maximum ease in photocopying. 

  • A brief summary must be included with each entry. 

  • All entries must have been published between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004, in a newspaper with at least 50% of the circulation located within the state.

Deadline for entry is July 31, 2004.
