Florida paper to refuse classified ads
for guns following murder
The
Sarasota Herald-Tribune will begin rejecting classified ads for firearms after
police say a man used a gun he bought through one of the ads to fatally shoot
his estranged wife.
Beginning
Oct. 1, the paper will only accept classified advertising for collectible
antique firearms manufactured before 1898, and those ads must be published
under the "Antiques'' or "Collectibles'' heading. The "Guns & Rifles''
category will be eliminated.
Retailers can still advertise firearms in display ads and inserts, but
they must include their dealer's license number. The Herald-Tribune says it is
the 16th newspaper in the country and the fifth in Florida to agree to tighter
standards for firearms advertising.

State Police misconduct demonstrates
need for records reform in Pennsylvania
The Office of Inspector General’s Investigative
Report on
Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct at the Pennsylvania State Police released last week revealed several shortfalls and problems with how
the State Police respond to complaints of trooper misconduct.

This case highlights that the current definition
of what is public under our open records laws is not sufficient. Pennsylvanians deserve the basic information
necessary for them to evaluate the performance of their public officials.
To spotlight this issue, we ask PNA members to either
publish this letter to the editor
or use the letter to write your own
editorial. Keeping the public focus on
this issue both on a state and local level will help us advance additional
changes to the Right to Know Act.
