Gov. Rendell to speak at PNA's 79th Annual Meeting
PA Gov. Ed Rendell has agreed to speak Oct. 30 at the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association's Annual Meeting in Hershey.
Gov. Rendell will appear Oct. 30 at 12:45, during the luncheon. He will be followed by John Castillo, retail general manager of Cabela's.

Members of the working press who would like to cover Rendell's appearance should contact Eric Wise, communications director for the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association.

Call to Legal Hotline, newspaper attorneys helped preserve right to attend criminal arraignment 
A front desk clerk at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility prevented a Citizens' Voice reporter from attending and witnessing a criminal arraignment at the facility Oct. 16.

Only after the reporter objected and requested the court proceeding be delayed until attorneys from The Citizens' Voice and the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association could be heard from were the media permitted to attend.

Bill protecting privacy of victims could impact newsgathering.
Several groups, including PNA, expressed their concerns with House Bill 1262 -- which protects the privacy of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking by using substitute addresses in government records -- at a meeting this week.

Crime reporting seminar offered in Philadelphia 
The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and Criminal Justice Journalists have teamed up to offer this terrific training opportunity for police and court reporting. Sessions include covering police scandals, lessons of the Washington-area sniper case, covering judicial elections and access issues with police and court records.

Attendees may sign up for all three days for $25 or one day for $15.

A U.S. District Court judge last night refused to unseal any search warrants issued in the federal investigation that has enveloped Mayor Street.

Post Gazette promotes David Beihoff
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced Oct. 17 that David Beihoff has been promoted to vice president of Block Communications Inc. - Newspaper Operations.
Beihoff, previously vice president and general manager of the Post-Gazette, will continue as general manager and has additionally been named president of the Post-Gazette.

Horizon Publications names new publisher for Ridgway Record
Darlene Coder has been named publisher and advertising manager of The Ridgway Record. She spent several years in the company's advertising department, most recently as advertising director. She began as a newspaper carrier and also worked in the print shop. 

Joseph Piccirillo, interim publisher of The Ridgway Record, will remain regional manager for all area newspapers owned by Horizon Publications.


Times Leader names finance, circulation executives
Art Smith has been named vice president and chief financial officer for the (Wilkes-Barre) Times Leader. He is a graduate of Penn State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Previously he was division controller for Quebeccor. 

Donnell Giles has been named vice president and circulation director for the Times Leader. Previously he was home delivery manager of The Philadelphia Inquirer. He has also worked for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Patriot-News names features editor
John McGinley, who shepherded the development of The Patriot-News' "Insideout" weekly entertainment guide, has been named editor of the newspaper's features department.

McGinley, 47, entertainment/arts editor since 1990, succeeds Cate Barron, who was named managing editor. As features editor, McGinley's responsibility includes arts/entertainment, the Living and Travel sections.
